I struggled to just go out as I was online and questioned the factor of doing a long run. Motivation...seriously not there.
So I eventually bit the bullet and set a time limit on how long I was actually going to run.
Maybe my questioning came from the cold...winter...
Or maybe it was because of the major storm that we just had yesterday called a northester named NEMO, which dropped about 6-9 inches in the city and 2-3 feet in Boston....crazy!
But the sun finally came out and that got me going slightly as I dragged my body into my running gear. It didn't seem that cold, as I put on my stuff and left. Simple...let's route around the bottom of Manhattan and back around. I didn't need to venture into Central Park today for a long run, but I don't think I would have lasted if I did that and schemed my way to doing less mileage. The essence of picking a longer route is that you are choosing to finish it...or really, you have no choice but to finish, since you are so far out.
So I first dropped off a DVD that I watched last night and then started my usual route going down 1st ave past the UN building and over to the East side...and boy did I have to trek through some snow, wet piles and slosh...it was at the moment of crossing at about 20th street near the circle line, where I went straight into the water of slosh and ice....oh crap!
My foot then was submerged and it was a no go from there on in...I started feeling my sock, cold and wet drag against my skin and no sooner than 2-3 miles in...I started feeling a blister forming. (Mind you that this is basically about 5 miles into the actual run) which was not good at all!
I carried on, past the Brooklyn Bridge, the seaport and across the Staten Island Ferry...the sun was shining and I went past some difficult areas to go around in the snow as I off-road ed...but you make with what comes with you.
Through Battery City where a guy yelled at me to say hello that was on the ferry to the a Statue of Liberty...he was a worker and was friendly...I donno! The wind was miserable though, right into your face and some winter glitter along with it. It was ok...
So almost home, by this point my mind was set to just make it home and cut across 57th street or 59th...I would be ok with ending up with 12 miles today. My legs were not hurting, but it was really the uncomfortably of the blister.
Then...as I was going up the West Side Highway, I see two familiar faces that I haven't seen in a while. Jos and Jon, whom I had always ran with from the downtown group and I since our crew had broken up because of different schedules and different things...
Ahh, our crew...the old flyer downtown crew. How I miss those years, which were very good years and much support in my life.
Anyways, I flagged down Jos and gave her a hug, so good to see her as it has been a while, since my busy schedule with coaching and my world turning around in the past 2-3 years...it has been crazy!
They told me that they couldn't chat too long as they were late and they just came from Central Park which was beautiful and was a winter wonderland...they told me to go! So I was convinced. They told me that they were doing Paris, as I shooed them off.
So...basically, changed my thoughts. I would venture up to Central Park, but would I go all the way around? Nah...ok, I decided to go midway and go all the way up to 72nd street (where I saw all of these kids sledding down the hill and having so much fun!) By that point, all I wanted to do was get home...not because of the snow, the cold...but because of my blister. I could have ran another 6-8 miles to complete my 20 miles...but the hunger (no water) and blister was getting to me.
Up to 72nd street, cross into Central Park, make my way around the lower loop and then done...
But right when I entered Central Park, no joke! It was beautiful! Seriously a winter wonderland where everyone was out enjoying the beautiful sunny weather, the fresh snow and the pure beauty of nature. It was outstanding!
I made my way around the lower loop just seeing everyone so happy and just taking pictures...decided to take a few pictures of my own.
Almost home!
I finished up running a total of 15 miles...not bad for a person who had a blister at mile 5...
Also, I have been practicing my stair climbing as last week really scared me with the whole Kelly Ripa fiasco, so my regular boston or rather marathon training had to wait.
It was a nice winter wonderland today...pretty perfect day out!
Pictures, soon to follow.

Now, here is the last 10 minutes of the LIVE with Kelly and Michael show where it shows a whole video montage of Kelly's decision to run for Team for Kids to her before actions, during (live footage of what I was wearing and capturing her every step) and video after of her celebration and her HUGGING ME! oh that was pretty cool...actually showed it both ways, where I was hugging her and the video on top of my head, and then a video of me hugging her! it was amazing!

so cool....such an awesome experience, such an amazing event and such a thrill....
Kelly Ripa calls me a "zen guru"...and...she got my last name correct! that was pretty amazing!

in her words, she said about me....

"He kept on telling me, "to keep breathing and you can do it kelly, control your breathing, you can do it!" & in my mind i kept saying, "can't do it, can't do it, can you....carry me up!"

ha, she was strong, competitive...and she really did great on her first try...seriously, 18:13 is a great time overall...
I think i need a new watch...well, i definitely do when racing as my times for the charleston marathon are somewhat on target, but not exactly...well right.

my official race pace was a 7:00 pace per mile.

here is what my watch gave me...
I lingered...i went out way too fast by surging with the first female and didn't really pace myself correctly for the last 3 miles...i slowed down. Uh! awful! I'm pleased with the pacing remarks that I coach so definantly on...i preach this...
Anyways, it's the practice that matters...how consistent you really can get.Trakmaniakhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11892519062439927083noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2945946493838195542.post-58061319325837361492013-01-20T22:25:00.000-05:002013-01-24T22:26:12.291-05:00Charleston Marathon Race recapI haven't done recaps in a while, so now that the new year started, I'll be writing more in my blog.
The morning started where I had woken up at a decent hour. I really couldn't sleep at all as I woke up multiple amounts of times: 2am, 4am and 6am (before my alarm) and then I finally got out of bed at 6:30. The race started pretty late at 8, so I didn't really need to get out until 7ish...where Betty Boop lived relatively close to the start.

In all race mornings, I ask myself the question, "why do I sign up for these races?" Seriously, why do we? We need to wake up so early and I guess, I'm not a "go getter" kind of person...not until I get to the starting line at least.

Got everything on: Brooks singlet, brooks shorts, brooks arm warmers, and brooks duel colored shoes: The Pure Connects. Yes, I wear two different colors, same brand shoes, but since I have seen the multi colored Nike track shoes for the 800 meters, I wanted to bring some element of branding to our sponsor. I was selected into the Brooks Inspired Daily Program this year for the 3rd year, as I am graciously appreciative because of the hard selection across the nation. I pretty much got in because I am a coach for two different charity groups for the NYC marathon and also work for the NYRR as a creative assistant manager. One of those charity groups: The Alzheimer's Association; team called -
Run to Remember, I have co-founded and have been a coach for 5 years.

The morning was cold (not much colder than waking up in NY) around this time, although it was a bit chilly. I was surprised for a southern state, although recently across the nation the colder states that have expected cold weather were getting warmer temperatures than the warmer states who had received colder temperatures than these warmer states. Funny that!

I wasn't sure if the race would offer baggage and needed to check that, so Betty Boop waited for me to make sure that it was ok, until I returned with the ok that they would have bag check. The bib didn't have a baggage bib! Ok...for my work for the NYRR, I am in charge of all race bibs for all NYRR events, so being a stickler about these things for my race, I notice!

Anyways, after finding this information, I went back outside to tell Betty Boop as she would return later to pick me up and I would be able to leave my after clothes in my baggage bag. Also my cell phone would be essential as well to give her a call afterwards.

I wedged myself behind a column of the school near the gym and stretched, eating my onion bagel (not ideal of a food to eat due to the amount of acid - having your body process this is not so good, because of the stomach gas, but I guessed I was an ultra runner and my stomach is better than most, so I chanced it). Usually the preferable cinnamon raisin or even plain would do. I stretched while I ate and then tried to locate my co-worker Daphne M. She was in town after deciding last minute to run the half marathon because she had grew up in Charleston and her parents still lived there. She found me and we chatted a bit until finally realizing it was time to get our bags in place and go to the starting line.

I had my throw away shirt on, the sun was nice, although it was windy and chilly still, but pretty ideal temperatures for running.

The race started with the national anthem (which sounded like Coroniel Sanders) was singing and then shortly the race began. I wished Daph, good luck and I was on my way. I needed to start out strong, but not too fast. I had seen that the pace group for the 3:15 was out very fast in front of me for a pace of 7 min per mile for the first mile. Then I heard one of the pace leaders saying, "oh, that was the first mile?" Yeah, you are in charge of a group of people and when you begin so quickly out in front, it really doesn't do much good. Although semi better to be a little out front than behind and needing to catch up. I glided by them and forged to the front finding a comfortable pace.
I took a few pictures, as I always do in the beginning, rather than the end when I am tired, and a guy later found out his name is: (____) next to me asked if I was part of the Brooks ID Program (guess with all of my Brooks gear, I would ask as well). He was part of the same program, as I took a picture of him and he was in for the Half. He later stayed to see me finish and we chatted a bit as he found out how I was part of the program and I found out he was chosen because he worked at a shoe store...so I took a picture of him, and he took a picture of me and we also took a picture together, as I told him that I would post it on the Brooks facebook page!.

I continued on as I didn't want to have him chase me as he described some of his injuries in the past, so he let me go. I quickly darted to be on pace as I took a few pictures of the course. One guy asked me how easy I looked while taking pictures, as I quickly responded "it's easier in the early stages, although we'll see how many pictures I take at mile 20," his response, "that's when the real race begins!"
Indeed.

The course was relatively flat, and we rounded points of downtown, through the nice avenues where I had roamed the night before. It was nice and beautiful and then we went out into the outer areas.

At mile 7 or 8, I started feeling it. Wow, this was really early to feel tired. Need to get into the groove. I tucked behind a group, although they slowed, so I passed them to just feel a good pace. Another guy followed and we stayed together for about a mile or two...I spotted a youngster, a mere boy running in the race at a great pace. I asked him what age he was running at and he told me that he was 15! 15! Damn! Seriously, absolutely amazing. I had thoughts of how your kids can apply for college and how your child can put on their application that they have done a half or full marathon...that would set a person apart from all the rest! Seriously...(Yes, folks, this is what I think about during a marathon!)
Anyways, moving on. The full marathon quickly separated from the half marathon at mile 10 or so, and that really separated the competition. This is what separated the men with the mice, (yes, I actually said that in my mind!). Seriously, where do I come up with these things!

I was slowing down as I could really feel just my body tire from the lack of training, but I moved on. I got passed by one guy and I wanted to stick with him. We were pretty deserted as I the only thing I could think about at that point was as if I was running in the desert...It was getting hot out now and the sun was finally piercing our skin. No one was around cheering, just you and the sparkling road (the road had glimpses of glass and speckles that shined as you passed and the sun just shined on it). That's all I could think about. I saw that a few runners had already passed...the front runners were way out in front as they were on their way back to join the half marathoners and I couldn't catch them...seriously, where were they taking us?

We ended up going out on this curved road, where most of us just cut the tangents and then got to this point of this yachting dock, we went out...and literally had to turn around at the dock...what? What kind of race was this? Then back out to where we left the half marathoners...you literally could see what place you were at and I saw that there was only one female ahead of me.
All I could here behind me were these guys that were jibbering away and in my mind I was thinking, gosh, these guys really are relaxed. They could go so much faster and they are just chatting away, while I am struggling....gosh, I need to hold them off. Ok, mile 11, just hold on till the half marathon mark...then you can quickly add 3 more miles and then you'll be at mile 16...I was seriously hurting...and struggling to keep pace.

When we were reunited with the half folks, the directions and folks that volunteered at these vital points were non-concerning. I had to scream ahead to ask which direction we were to go to and the traffic ahead while merging with the first time half marathoners as they cheered us on, although didn't provide much room for us to run around. It really would have been nice if the race directors offered our own lane or had a separation, because we had to zig zag through the crowd. It would be not that far as the jibber-jabber group behind me caught up and frollicked ahead, and as we again split off between the full marathon and half, I stuck with the group, continuing to pace myself and in hopes to try to get a sub 3. The guys slowed down and I forged ahead and they formed a group behind me. I quickly saw that a group had formed of 3-8 people and a female runner quickly jumped ahead. She was about 30 meters ahead and I made the decision to go ahead and catch up to her...I caught up and then passed her telling her that literally the girl in front of her was the first female. She wasn't that far behind and I quickly felt a real nice groove. I chatted to her that she was rolling and I was rooting for her, since she had an extra gear and she was rolling.

She said I was just moving!

I told her, "I just wanted to see this (these two gals - meaning her and the person ahead of her) unfold!"

As I let her go and said she could catch her, I surged ahead...catching up to the first female. She actually tried to draft off of me, although sort of failed because she couldn't keep up. She asked if she could, and I knew what she was doing, so I didn't mind, although in the back of my mind, I could only think what the other gal was thinking...(Hopefully not thinking that I was helping the other gal!)
After I surged ahead and lost her, I could hear girl chatter behind, both ladies were running side by side with each other. I didn't care, all I would do is just keep running.

I really felt good and the miles kept coming. 16, 17...then I could hear the crowd just cheering, I now felt the lady that I dropped very much earlier who I rooted on, right on my back. It's ok, I totally embraced this moment. I would help her and allow her to piggy back on me and go, push and surge as much as I could (as I wanted to push for a sub 3) as much as I could. We worked together as actually she worked off of me. I would guide her through some mazes of the course and keep pushing as much as I had in me...18...19...20...21...22...23...

Ok, by mile 23, we were moving as I couldn't keep the pace that I was pushing. I felt as though I didn't know if I was pushing her too hard, but I wanted to see her win and go forth to do so. I told her to keep going as she passed me, we only had 3 more miles to go, although those were the tougher miles to go through and from mile 18-23, we were powering through 6:45 min miles. I have done what I needed to do, to help her in any way I could in straightening her path along the not so great paths of clearly defining the course route...

I can honestly say that I did see one guy fall of course during this time and when I passed, I told a spectator or was it a volunteer for the event to close up the gap of confusion...
But all I could remember is basically trying to hold on. We winded our ways, made some turns here and there and basically made it to some portions where the end was near. We went to some parks and riversides...and then went along a long stretch...and we were almost done! Left turn...into a town center...no finish line...

Ok, so we need to make yet another left and soon enough the finish line will be there...

Ok...sprinting, surging to the so called finish line...and...where could it be? Seriously? I mean all of this surging and sprinting is making me feel tired...plus I can hear the guy in back of me...oh gosh, hold on!

Keep moving! Uh...

Then one more push, turning right now and I can see something!

Sprint some more and the final surge!

Done! Finished...

Race is over and I could finally relax. I saw that the first female had crossed the line about 800 meters in front of me...and I congratulated her at the finish, although she was surrounded by video camera guys and so on...
(Don't you just hate that?)
Anyways, I had an early fight to the airport in the morning which wasn't too early because I would still get Betty Boop to drive me + I wanted to sleep in a bit to allow my recovery of rest "better".
I knew I had gotten my things together and we headed out the door. Betty and I said our good-bye's as I really appreciated her hospitality, her driving me around and just showing me around Charleston and catching up. It was great fun and totally going to bring Nicki down to this city as she wanted to see it.
I got online for security as I then remembered that I had totally forgotten my toiletries at her apartment. I laughed. Whoops! That needs to be sent back to my place! Uh...oh well!
I got through ok and could hear my terminal being called...just in time. Wow, talk about close calls. I usually get there pretty early due to departure times and leave thinking that I rather be there earlier than later. It was ok. I had been upgraded to a "higher" level to get onto the plane and getting on quicker, but not first class.
No biggie. As people boarded, we found out that the person that was suppose to sit next to us, sat in the seat across the isle and the real person who was suppose to sit in that seat was going to switch with that girl, but went to the back and never came back...so that left the seat in the middle empty. (The guy next to be told me to put my arm rest down to place my "territory" as he was concerned that the person that was sitting in the middle was going to be "larger") it is true with our population these days being bigger and wider, seats on airplanes getting smaller and the tightness of travel is not much more comforting. I placed my arm rest down and waited, but no one ever came back.
The flight was short anyways from Charleston to Atlanta, Georgia, which was weird to me...but I'll go with the flow as my flight there would just add on mileage points on my air travel.
We arrived to Atlanta and I traveled to my next terminal finally looking at my next ticket to find that I had been upgraded to that flight as well! Wow! I was in first class! Who knew!
As I boarded, I found that the amenities of first class was not so great as the first flight. My first flight, I had a tv to myself and first class offered more room (me in one of those chairs is ridiculous, you can literally fit two of me in those chairs!) Which was more room, and a beverage in the beginning...and later on they brought you a place mat for food....food! Wow!
When the food came out, I was overly surprised because it wasn't your average airplane food, it was literally a full meal! 2 pieces of fried chicken (cold though) and fruit, dessert and bread sticks! Holly cow! I was way spoiled on this one and didn't expect that. Seriously!
Anyways, that was that...as now I land at LGA and homeward bound!

Ok, flying down to South Carolina where this week was so busy...why do I do that?
Uh! Seriously, a week before a race I would like to run just a little bit before to feel what pace I would like to go at and not go out too fast. I always preach that you need to keep your athletic breath for at least 2-3 days or else your lungs will feel "out of breath" when you run back again and just be out of breath...also your body tells your brain that you are "exhausted" and you will be out of breath earlier in the race.
So that scared me once I got off the flight in the morning. I was greeted by my friend who I call, Betty Boop (who is my sister's friend and old roommate when Michelle lived in Charleston) and we went to her place, dropped off my bag and then went out to see the sights.
We went to grab a bite to eat, then went to grab my things for the race and then off to see the sites: saw the architecture of the older mansions, the river beds, the market place and just hung out till we had dinner and then headed back off to rest up...after 3 beers that day! I usually have a strict rule that I wouldn't drink for a month before...and here I am drinking 3 beers before a marathon!
Crazy! But, why not right?
It was the beginning of the year, the first of my marathon season, my goal was just to Boston Qualify, which is now harder to do because they now dropped the qualifying by 5 minutes and my usual average is about a 3:06-3:08, meaning I need to run a little faster to give myself a cushion of about a 3:03.
That said, I only trained for about a month due to the winter time and usually I do take about a month off from training because it's a transition zone from my training other people, but it was different this turn around because I continued to train my Miami folk, who were continuing to train for their first marathon due to the NYC marathon being cancelled.
Also, now starting the NYC half training, first for us to coach this team around, which is different!
Anyways, at night it felt as though I wasn't going to reach my goals for this race because of the beers and because of my well...choices for dinner: Pulled pork sandwich (a pork slab) and a twice baked potato! Yum!
Anyways, we'll see!

It was pretty bad and I needed to regain that confidence.
All good. Today will be the day.
It was suppose to be a beautiful weekend, although there was all this fog all day, it was suppose to be nice and warm, but it was a bit colder than you really though (maybe it's because it wasn't sunny at all...) And it was pretty humid outside, so the moisture levels made it colder.
Love sunday mornings as it is pretty sweet because no one is up!
Love it!
Got to Columbus Circle for what my watch called out in say 5:17 pace? Come on...seriously? No way...not even close.
I had to restart my watch again when I met up with Amanda L. I tried to actually sneak up behind her, although she turned and saw me...then we were on our way.
We decided to go off to the west side, flat & fast...should be like what we both would be doing in our marathons.
The game plan was to go south for a bit for about 3-4 miles down and then to turn around and head on up north so, that Amanda could just tag out at the upper west side (way upper west) and I would continue back.
I was going to go to Trader Joes after the run as I usually go grocery shopping.
The run was great! I felt a little sluggish as at times, I was wondering how I could go faster next week to qualify. I mean we were going 7:30's and I needed to go sub 7:05's to get under a 3:05...seriously...bit difference!
Amanda L. was in the cast of Annie, the broadway show, as she invited me, my girlfriend, Nicki B. and another R2R teammate prior to the show's preview director's screening. It is simply amazing!
Seriously...I really thought back to my childhood days and brought some clarity in life...like being happy, getting to the point of being happy and realizing how much of a difference my life has been before...and now. I mean, I am very lucky to have the things that I have at my point in my life...
A great job
A new lifestyle
A great girlfriend
A wonderful family who loves me and cares for me
My running career is great
I coach...
What else do I need?
And when I say happiness...I mean...how much more happiness do I need? (Anyways, I'll get back to that in my future blog post this year)
So ended up leaving Amanda at 125th, taking a picture with her before she went to Fairway Market to get some water. I, on the other hand have learned to run and not take water for a good 12-15 miles worth (maybe that's why I felt so sluggish) and then it hit...
Stomach issues started to plague me and I had to walk a bit on the way back.
Really?
Yup folks, all runners get stomach issues any day, any time...I'm not a machine you know!
So, yes...made it ok and walked / changed my warm clothes on 72nd street before seeing my beautiful runners (Alana P, Cindy L, & Indra E.) They all were training for the Miami Marathon, due to the cancellation of the NYC marathon.
I walked to Trader Joes, bought my items, then walked through the park, where...I decided to take a picture of me and my cool ass Brooks Pure Connects - which, yes...indeed...
They are two different colors because I buy both colors and simply switch them...just to be different!
Hey, it catches your eye right?
I mean, why not!
Anyways, it's my new look for the year, I have tried it in some races in November and December and have gotten questioned about it...
The best was from a Team for Kids member telling me that a friend of hers asked her why I had two different colored shoes on, she asked if it was just for style. She said, well...he's a coach and it must have some kind of special aspect... (medical, form, specialization, etc) and can't be because of just the color and style of it....so she asked me!
And what did I say...yup! Just for style...no other special relevance to it folks...just plain old me being me!
What's that?
Obnoxiousness? Ha!
Just Pure Run Happy!

But yes, so I woke up to an NPR story on a person going through the sidewalk while waiting for the bus stop at 60th and 2nd avenue...

What intrigued me was more was the fact of the location, rather than the actual act of the person going through the sidewalk...which to anyone would be completely opposite.

This was right near where I lived...I pass that every time I run!

So, what happened was that on Friday it was raining...maybe a bit too much and I guess it got loose...

But seriously a person going through a sidewalk! Come on...seriously, it is kind of crazy and she didn't just fall 3 feet or something, she fell like 6-10 feet down.

That is kind of scary! No? I mean she said she was under an awning, and she said all of a sudden!

Boom!

She was down and out underneath the ground...

I couldn't help myself, but I had to see it for my own eyes...

And here it is!

Seriously!

Yup!

We recently formed an Alzheimer's NYC Half team and today was the first day of practice.

Mind you that it's the first day, which we had seen on facebook that there were going to be 2 people that were going to show...but seriously...

Not even one person showed up!

Now that is ridiculous! Seriously...

Uh! Take it with a grain of salt, but come on folks...get your butts training!

Hopefully we won't have that again!

Till next time...Trakmaniakhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11892519062439927083noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2945946493838195542.post-17965071351052830842013-01-11T08:18:00.000-05:002013-01-12T22:09:04.000-05:00$20So...walking to work this morning and ever so slightly I find $20 on the floor! Sweet deal!

Seriously, that was pretty amazing.

I looked around to see if anyone had lost it, although it looked as though no one has...

Ok. Just to be fair, about 4 weeks ago, I lost $35 when returning late with Ms. Nicki B. as she was coming back from the airport and I went to get dinner.

Last thing I know...
I remember putting it on her counter (although I can be mistaken) and must have lost it coming up her stair well - since her elevator was not working...

Anyways, long story short, I found $20 on the floor!

No running today - rest day, but busy day at work trying to catch up with everything...

Crazy!Trakmaniakhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11892519062439927083noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2945946493838195542.post-48027521939380612922013-01-06T18:54:00.001-05:002013-01-12T22:10:00.846-05:00Today's recovery...Weather: sunny
Temperature: 44 degrees

So today was a rather easy day, 6 miles, which ended up to being 7 miles in the end.

Decided against running in Central Park since I had ran my 21 miles there yesterday. So, decided to run near my apartment at the east river pathway.

When I went out, it was warmer than I had expected, being winter and all, I hated the fact of running in the cold. But decided to clean the apartment (my chore is sweeping and mopping the floor) and I haven't done that in a while, so I needed to! Anyways, I hate doing it because it always leaves my nose and throat all muffled due to the dust that builds up and my throat is often scratch in the end...uh!

Whatever!

Decided that since I had so much energy, I would now be able to run. It's often good to get motivated from others on facebook when reading other people's posts (thank you Merri S and Lora V for posting that you have ran earlier in the day)...so I couldn't be a slacker! Even though I ran 21 miles yesterday.

So...I went out, it was a beautiful day, as the sun was out and the temperature was 10...12 degrees warmer than yesterday!?! Seriously, during the winter, 5 degrees is a huge difference for me and I would take that any day of the week...which is good because this week is going to be pretty warm.
So...In the sun, it was beautiful...nice, warm and relaxing. A nice easy run to just go out and go for a relaxing run. I found a dear friend of mine as I passed her (elle g...as she was finishing her run) I said hello....I went up all the way to 125th street (where you cannot go anymore) and turned around...then went back.

I wanted to just change the scenery a little bit, but decided against it until I made my way to 81st, which avoids the staircase down. Then off to the streets!

In the shaded parts, it was cold, but it was nice and relaxing and I took off my running vest...
Finishing up on York, as I passed the hospital that I was staying at earlier last year when I had my hernia taken care of and where the day after old guys in the emergency room was passing me and scooting around as I layed in bed not even able to get up! Yes folks, it was bad...my blood pressure got as low as 60...and my heart rate got as low as 45...or was it 40?

Yup...anyways, don't want to go through that again...as I passed 72nd street and finished up...quick sprints to the finish...uh! Crazy fast, as I tried to elongate my stride...practice what you preach...

This morning I woke up at 5:15 am, got ready with my clothes all layed out from the night before. It's cold out and doing a 20 miler with the intentions of running 2 laps before the actual Joe Kleinerman 10K race and meeting up with some of my Alzheimer's Association teammates to give them their registration bibs.

It was cold and windy out as I sprang to run to Central Park. I would hear my name being called out while running down Literary Walk...

Boy, who knows me at this hour? Seriously?

I actually knew who it was as I found out it was one of my co-workers on the YCS (Youth and Community Services side) of the NYRR. I had been a part of that crew for 2 years and being very involved with the track and field program and the Youth Events Team.

Anyways, I had to get to the bandshell as I saw many people that I have grown to love. These people were a great part of me and we chatted (during the days leading up to the NYC marathon expo, as they were getting ready) and I was helping out with the volunteers department. So I left my bag with the volunteers tent and went about with my 2 laps that I wanted to get in before the actual race.

I went about, trying to get a good rhythm, trying to get warm as the wind wisped into your face. This morning wasn't too bad, I was all wrapped up and bundled for it, although later in January and February would only get colder...

It was 5:55 am when I started, I would find a water/bathroom sign hanging from a L-pole at the first water station...yes, that's work talk right now, and now I am more conscious about the sign age at each NYRR race and just overall security reasons...so, I would tell someone when I loop around again.
The night still wore on as I finished my first lap of 5 miles in 30ish minutes...I told the event manager, Edwin O. about the L-pole hanging and he simply said that the zip ties were all simply snapping due to the wind and the cold. Plastic bending, yup...snapping like peanut brittle.

I told Edwin that I would fix it as I looped around the second time, all I needed was a zip tie. I have done this before in my previous jobs while helping out with the events crew in the NYC half and the Brooklyn half doing an all night shift putting up signs...and yes, one of the times it was with Dan S.

Where we had a blast of a time with the mini golf carts flying around in Central Park.

As I took down the L-pole, I was sure to be careful in not snapping the other zip tie (I only had one zip tie and it would clearly be a shame if I broke both and then the sign would no longer be up!) That would clearly be bad. I slowly maneuvered it down, fixed it and then slowly back up, cutting it some slack and not tightening it up all the way. The wind was definitely an issue and I got it up...and went on my way in running again. I quickly got cold due to the standing, although warmed up again as I started running.

By this time it was 6:35 am and I would meet up with Amanda L. from my Alzheimer's team to run a few laps at my speed. She had been wanting to run longer with a faster pace and I had welcomed to have her join me in my insanity...but she had 2 shows of Annie that day and night and 2 more the following day...which is absolutely insane!

So I welcomed her joining me. I liked the company, but as I went counter clockwise around the east
side and rounded up around the west side...she was no where to be found...I continued on thinking that she decided to have some sanity and decided against waking up at a crazy hour...but as I rounded towards the reservoir.

There she was!

She was coming up from Columbus Circle and I was going down...so she made a U-turn and joined me. We went for the rest of the way and finished the loop. Then, did another lower loop for good measure.

I met up with the teammates (Melissa M, her friend and Dr. Rob H) got my bag from the volunteers tent, then moved all of my items to baggage.

Brrr....it was getting cold.

Running beforehand and then cooling down in the cold and then starting back up again is definitely not a good idea...but I endured it as I got into a slower colored corral (yellow? Green?) Instead of the usual faster blue, which I am assigned to.

I decided to pick yellow and stick with that. It was unusual that I didn't know anyone and I found and said hello to a R2R teammate - Elizabeth M. As she walked into the starting corral and was just going...as everyone was moving and I kept along not to cause a wreck if I stopped and actually said hello.

So, I continued on at an easy pace trying to stay with the crowd, trying to find some company along the way. Until I saw one of my NY Flyer teammates, Bo K. She was running gingerly and we have not seen each other in a while, so it was a good time to catch up, we chatted and just seemed like a stroll...we chatted about how our lives where and she told me about her dating lifestyle. Uh! I was laughing at some of the stories and jokingly around we made.

She then got competitive and started to run a bit...then burnt out at the hills...which, I didn't chat with her until we finished because some people don't want to chat (and I could sense it). She had some minor issues with her knee and wasn't feeling well that morning, so nothing to it...we ran together, I was in no rush and ate my bagel as we ran, I was getting hungry at that point.

Anyways, after we got through the race, she thanked me for staying with her and we told each other we would keep in touch more. I needed to finish up my last loop around the park as I started up again to finish up...I then saw Amanda L. again as I finished and thanked her for running that morning and then ran into some Team for Kids members to ask them how they did.

Wheew! Finally over! It wasn't so bad, just waking up in the morning and running...going on some tight schedules and not fluidly running from one to the other.

But the day was beautiful, morning sunshine and I walked home...seeing my "bff" from ycs, Ivette B. as we chatted. I wandered home with my packed warm clothes...ahh...so nice!
20 done...taper time and we'll see how we do in Charleston!Trakmaniakhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11892519062439927083noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2945946493838195542.post-69480794065050489792013-01-01T06:29:00.000-05:002013-01-04T06:31:09.444-05:00Start off the New Year!Ok...so yes, New Years hit off with quite the Bang!

As last year's miles totalled out on my Garmin to being 1,641 miles totalling about 241 hours of running...but I think I far exceeded that because during my 100 miler, training others and well...not quite adding up...but I guess it's about 2K of miles! Crazy!

So...resolutions, resolutions for the upcoming year?

_run 2013 miles?
_write more in my blog...

I'm back and needed that year of time off. Going public is tough, but that year of rest was definitely needed.

So I finished off the 2012 year with dinner with the GF's NB's friends...fancy dinner on Sunday night, drinks and then work (which I had thought was going to be a rather light day in the office) turned out being quite the hectic day in place of the Midnight Run happening that night as there were many last minute sign ups and freak outs! I needed to console and put out some fires...not large at all.

But I ran into the park, carrying all of my fancy clothes in my backpack for the night and wanted to re-assure and make sure that everything was all settled for our events crew...re-assurance is something that I try harping on.

So, after that was over. I ran up to Harlem, totalling out 4.5 miles to end the year.

Ended up, we actually stayed in and had a chill night...but those two days of late nights killed me and I stayed in on New Years day - only going out for a run to start out the new year with 13.1 miles!

I wanted to swing by Times Square, although decided against it. I was lucky to catch one of my Flyer friends, SH as she kept me company for one of my two loops in Central Park.

Ate a delicious dinner that combined: Bacon, pasta, tomato sauce, corn & spinach.

Decided I needed some pictures, if not running, to entice people in my blog now.

Oh that's one in the books for the year!Trakmaniakhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11892519062439927083noreply@blogger.com0Manhattan, New York, NY, USA40.7841484 -73.96614069999998340.5917729 -74.288864199999978 40.9765239 -73.643417199999988tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2945946493838195542.post-46140867723359116422012-12-30T06:02:00.000-05:002013-01-04T06:04:36.166-05:00Lost MoJo?Ok...so today was a beautiful day...sunny, cold, but beautiful.

Seriously a day that any runner would love to go out and do a long run in...

So why did I not?

I think I have lost my mojo. You know some of those days where you are just not feeling it, not at all itching to run...

My motivation has gone out the window as my body (leg) aches a little (a small nagging pain in which my achilies has been the weakest point in the past 3 years - nothing that is not runable in)

Anyways, seriously!

Yes...

I don't know if it is the cold that just sucks my energy and running mojo away?

Or

Is it just that I am lazy?

Ha!

I can clearly also blame it on the bad news that my bestie in running coaches (AH) is no longer running the Charleston Marathon with me...as we were gearing up to run a sub 3 to 3:05!

Oh! I had been training hard for Charleston because I didn't want to let AH down. I knew that I was not in real shape to run...but I was going to try my best to go ahead and do that.

Winters are my resting time and especially since the NYC marathon gave such a heart/headache (meaning that it was the first time that we were relieving people of this hardship where we trained people and the race never happened?!?) We were utterly disappointed and utterly exhausted over that factor...but yes, I owed this to AH because she helped me along with Knickerbocker race that I had ended up getting 10th overall and adding to my 3rd 10th place finish in that race...

Anyways, I'm hoping to get my Mojo back!Trakmaniakhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11892519062439927083noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2945946493838195542.post-63196304612464771492012-12-29T21:41:00.001-05:002013-01-04T06:05:48.305-05:00Resolutions...Funny how things turn out in your life. Life is all about it's up's and down moments. It's careful twist and turns and multiple jungernuts that are thrown at you from multiple distances. Many people can fall into deep holes, while others can swerve to avoid them...
For me...the past two years of my life has been tough...

I left my college dream of training and being an architect (of 5 years out of school) to look for more rewarding work. Coaching, at the time, had given me the runners high I needed as I was put on furlough (at the time, half the architects in New York City have been laid off) and working 4 of the 5 days was not too bad. Until, I got put on the chopping block for 3 months.
During this time, it might have worked out to being a blessing in disguise or just pure downhill from there...but I'll go with the blessing in disguise...

Given a little history, I had well been on my in running marathons and my concentration at work had been "tardy" (to my employers, but seriously, I work hard!). I had been running different marathons and fundraising the Alzheimer's Association running programs for both the Chicago and Boston Chapters and have been part of the Junior Committee with the NYC chapter for my 3rd year as we had tried to put our charity name into the hat to be an official charity for the NYC marathon)...it was our 3rd year and we were giving up hope...but just as I was laid off, we became an official charity and I had other work to do...

Let's just say that I became lucky (or unlucky) that this was taking my time in what I had thought was going to help my career.

In short, I became very lucky in taking on a coaching class and became RCAA certified to become a marathon coach at the time where we became an official charity and long and behold, I became a co-founder in starting up an official charity group for the NYC marathon.

Boom! Five years later...

I no longer am an architect...

I no longer work at a factory for Out of Print Clothing...

I no longer am a coaching consultant for the NYRR Youth Department...

But,

I still am a coach for the NYRR Team for Kids...5 years and running...
I still am a coach for the Alzheimers Association...
I still work for the NYRR...although I play a more intricate roll in the company now...as an Assistant Manager for the Creative Department...which, with my background is pretty versatile in the amount of knowledge that I carry from my multiple jobs that I have done in the past.

Although, let's be serious now and say that I'll be back in writing more blog posts and be sure to say that the new 2013 will bring more prosperity than ever before...

Because I clearly would like to say good radiance to the past 2 years and am looking forward to a year where I can finally focus on me...and getting better, healthier, happier, and doing more to better myself and those around me.

I know this may sound strange, but yes...I have been down and out, I know what it feels like to be down in the dumps and I know that this recession really doesn't help, I have been there before and can honestly say to those who currently are without jobs that hopefully one is waiting for you around the corner...do not loose faith and do not give in...keep trucking, go at it as hopefully by reading this, you will gain hope!

HOPE is a strong word...as many of us still hold on to the dreams that diverse around this 4 letter word.

One can only dream...

as the word of true happiness...and am getting ever so close to the tranquil feeling of that security...and gaining what I once had.

Someone once asked me (yes, you know who you are), what I wanted in life.

My answer:
Happiness...

A simple, yet hard, answer.

Why?

Well...I'll answer that tomorrow.

How well do you even know your own self?

Seriously, yes...I have been on hiatus in the past year or so gathering myself, going through some rough times, going through some great times, although I have found out many things in that one year about myself, though I really truly believe that even though you say that you know yourself the best (because hey, you are yourself...)

Do you really know yourself the best?

I mean sometimes it might feel that you do. Sometimes it feels as though your best friend might even know yourself better than you do because some things you do you might not even notice...

But, do you know yourself even that well?

Even if you did...do you even know the funny little quirks that others might know about you that you do, say or just done on habit that make you...well, you!

Funny question right?

And all the time on hiatus, you thought I wasn't doing anything...

Welcome back me!

The "M-Dot" is a badge of honor for any triathlete and completing an Ironman isn't an easy task but then again, neither is running 100 miles alongside of the Erie Canal in the middle of winter. Endurance athletes continue their quest to push their bodies to the limit. They seek the most extreme events such as the famous Badwater 135 mile Ultra Marathon which takes place in Death Valley- the Winter Beast of Burden 100 Mile Ultra Marathon is now bringing to debate, who actually has the hardest ultra marathon? Just ask accomplished Ultra Runner, Mark "Doc" Ott who has chosen to permanently brand his body with our logo after completing what he called, "The most challenging race of my life." Even the current record holder of the famous Badwater 135, Valmir Nunes has been quoted saying, "This race is by far the hardest race I've ever run."

Valmir and "Doc" Ott went head to head at The 2011 Winter BoB. Valmir went on to break the course record by 8 minutes which was previously set by former Lockport resident, Richard Cook. Rumor has it that pending a work related trip, David Ploskonka might be in attendance at the 2012 Winter B-o-B. Another very accomplished ultra-runner, Ploskonka, has multiple Badwater finishes and is the winner of the 2010 Summer 100 Mile Beast of Burden.

The 2012 Winter Beast of Burden is now just over a week away and boy is it going to be action packed! Valmir Nunes is flying in from Brazil (for the 3rd straight BoB event in a row). "Doc" Ott is also returning giving him another chance to go head to head with our Brazilian buddy, Nunes. Although "Doc" vowed never to run the Winter Beast again, he stated that the real reason for his return is to try and snatch up our "Double Beast Buckle" (A special buckle given to those who complete both 100 Mile BoB's in the same year). We also have former Lockport resident and previous course record holder, Richard Cook. Cook will be running his own race to hopefully regain the status of "course recorder holder" which he lost in battle last year to Nunes as he struggled to finish. Another accomplished ultra runner participating again this winter is Ryan O'Dell. Ryan's ultra race resume is just as long as my email. When you look at race results, Ryan's name can always be found at the top of the list. He's won a 24hr ultra and placed 2nd in two 100's. Could this be the 100 miler that Ryan has been waiting for? He's got the experience and strength needed to pull it off so, it'll be interesting. Now, throw in our wild card and Badwater veteran David Ploskonka. David has proven to be more than a worthy competitor as he's won The 2010 Summer BoB . So, as you can see you have more than just an ultra marathon folks, you have what I'm calling, "The Battle of the Beasts!" But, as we have witnessed in the past, you don't have to have one of the great names in ultrarunning to win, you just have to be a great ultra runner. Just ask Brian "The Beast" Hsia, winner of The 2011 Summer Beast of Burden 100. Brain ran his first 100 mile ultra at the Summer race. Running with a smile on his face all day Brian was about to finish comfortably in 3rd place and he only had 1 mile to go. Brian "The Beast" passed two people before he would cross the finish line, one of which was the leader from the start, Valmir Nunes of Brazil. That day, Brian shocked the ultra running community proving that an ultra is anybody's race and he did it with class.

As I sit here writing to you, the warm sun is shining through my window. Right now it's a beautiful 45 degrees outside but, I can't have this come race day. I used to think Mother Nature and I understood each other. I'd provide the warm bodies and she would blast them with her freezing winds while dropping a mixture of rain, hail and snow just as she's done in the past. So, what's The Winter Beast of Burden without snow? Honesty, I don't know and guess what...neither will any of the participants! I got to hit the reset button on my gratitude meter, and think of all the ways that running has led me on a different path. It doesn't matter what our surroundings and circumstances are, runners can always move through them and get to a better place.
Kristin Armstrong, Make it count, Mile Markers blog, Runner's World.com
So...the first marathon of the year begins...as I wake up at N's apartment and quickly get dressed to meet up with the other crazies to go to Mississippi and Alabama.
First stop, Mobile, Alabama...off the plane and driving off to Mississippi, across the border...to do our first marathon there: Mississippi Blues Marathon and meeting up with a bunch of other crazy runners (mostly marathon maniacs) and doing a double marathon or back to backs...or as I call them...doublers!
This will be my 3rd doubler...the first being: New Hampshire and then Maine marathons a year ago, where I had a goal to complete the double...and an inner goal to get a sub 3:10 in each one...which I had accomplished.
The second being the JFK 50 miler and then the monkey marathon in the fall...which completely knocked me down and probably was my worst weekend (also a finale in my season) and probably the worst "enjoyable" marathon that I have done - due to the cold rain.
This weekend? We'll see...I have no initial plan going this time around. Possibly as I hope to gun for a sub 3:10 in each one, which would be a good determiner for New Orleans to go a sub 3:05 and then later down in the season for me to go sub 3:00 to sub 2:55 in Boston. But we shall see how the Winter proves, as I do hate the cold season, which just began and hasn't even it February yet...the worst month in NYC...
Then after Boston, I am pacing for the 3:20 group for the Kentucky Derby Marathon and then...I was planning on doing the Flying Pig...although that might just fall through as I plan on doing the Rock and Roll Seattle Marathon with my sister in June. Oh brother!
As for after June, that's when training for the nyc marathon begins as I also plan on doing possibly 2-3 100 milers (2 official 100 milers and 1 - 24 hour race). We'll see how that comes around...as I just might end up doing a 24 hour race and one 100 miler race. Then the fall season rolls around...not really sure what is on the radar for fall yet!
But first thing comes first, let's knock this marathon down as we bring in the new year...
Hopefully my let's are up to the test...gave them a good rest to heal up for a great fall season last year...thoroughly beat up!
Here we go again!
